About the coffee

A beautifully soft and rounded natural from the highlands of Ngozi, this lot brings together comforting sweetness and gentle fruit character. Expect notes of vanilla, blueberry jam and mellow pear, wrapped in brown sugar richness with a delicate, balanced acidity. It’s an easy-going cup with a refined sweetness - perfect for slow mornings or an all-day brew.

Gihere Washing Station, established in 1984, works with over 1600 smallholder producers across the Ngozi region. Farms here are incredibly small - often around 250 trees per producer - making collaboration essential. Farmers hand-pick ripe cherries and deliver them to the station, where the coffee is carefully sorted and dried on raised beds.

The station itself is well-equipped, with extensive soaking and flotation systems and more than 200 drying tables, allowing for consistent, high-quality processing. This infrastructure has played a key role in supporting local farmers, improving access to resources, education, and long-term sustainability. After drying, the coffee is transported to Gitega for milling and export.

Burundian microlots are typically selected from daily lots at washing stations, based on standout cup quality. Because most farmers own very small plots of land, these lots are blends from many producers rather than single farms - capturing a shared regional profile that highlights the best of Ngozi’s terroir.

A classic example of Burundian natural coffee - elegant, sweet, and quietly complex.
